Sydney + for 2 weeks
 

Greetings! My husband, toddler and I will be flying to Sydney this month for two weeks and would like to stay in a serviced apartment or two bedroom suite with a view of the harbor and opera. We plan on spending quality time in Sydney and venturing out for day trips to the Blue Mountains and up the coast. Are we fooling ourselves to think there might be something reasonably priced and very nice in the center? It's not peak time, so we expect there should be something...please lend us your expertise!

Depends on what you consider reasonably priced. How much are you willing to pay?

probably about $US200 a day. Are those "last minute" websites worth looking at?

I usually use wotif.com if I'm going to Melbourne - so I imagine it's the same for Sydney (which is more expensive!)

The advantage is that you can get an idea of location. The ideal would be Quay West - but that's quite expensive. Unfortunately, there's not really an off-season in Sydney - and I'm not sure what $US 200 will get you.

Yes, wotif allows you to pull up info on each of the properties they list, but I don't know how you could be sure of getting a harbour view room. They don't come cheap, so you may have to lower your sights on that point.

Although I don't know of any particular properties, there may be something on the north shore of the harbour, e.g. Milsons Point, that would be more reasonably priced and close to a train or ferry stop. Whatever, for a 2-week stay I'd definitely be looking for a serviced apartment. If you search on 'sydney hotels' on this forum you should find plenty of recommendations for hotels and apartments in the CBD (central business district) of Sydney.

Obviously prices won't be listed in US$, so you'll be looking for something up to say AU$270 at current rates.

if you do a search on this forum for sydney apartment you'll find quite a few threads. Europewithkids (search meriton and you should find) did quite a bit of research before deciding where to stay - click on him/her as the author and it will bring up their posts. for views, agreed - at that end of town it may well be very expensive. when you look at www.wotif.com, click on the small 'show a map' button when the sydney cbd offers have loaded - it shows a map of where all the hotels are. you may also want to look at the rocks as an option - you may not get a view, but not a bad location (short walk to the real thing!)

I've never used this company but it gives you some apartments that you can rent on a weekly basis at around AUD1400 per week.

I would select Sydney City and Lower Northern Suburbs (in particular Kirribilli, Milson's Point & North Sydney as these areas would most likely give you harbour views and good transportation either via train or ferry

Thanks so much all! We are so indecisive and have a couple options we're looking at: Quay West (depsite the expense) Meriton (World Tower or Pitt Street) and Grand Mercure. Does anyone have anything to say about these places? Specific or general comments welcome.
