Sydney: Cheap Restaurant Suggestions?
 

I know which are chic and expensive but haven't read much about good food at inexpensive prices. We are staying in the Rocks area. Suggestions?

Hi, Mike!<BR>I guess the first "rule" for you to follow is: don't eat at the Rocks if you want to save money! The other end of Sydney is where it's all happening!<BR><BR>There are lots of ways to eat cheaply in Sydney, and it all depends on how far down in price you want to go. Here are a few ideas:<BR>1. Catch a bus or train to Newtown (15 minutes)and walk down King St: no point in trying to recommend one restaurant as there are dozens, all delectable.<BR>2. Walk through Sydney to Chinatown, near Sydney Terminal Station. Some of the little restaurants on the fringes of Chinatown are even cheaper than those in Chinatown itself.<BR>3. Try the Clubs. RSL Clubs, Catholic Clubs, Leagues Clubs. Most of these are in the suburbs, but there are a few in the city area. Most have several dining rooms, but when you sign in as a (free) temporary member, ask for the bistro. There are dress rules in these establishments, but they are fairly liberal.... and you must be from out of town to get in as a temporary member. Some clubs let you eat as much as you want for about $11. Others have "half-price" nights. This is where the locals go to eat.<BR>4. Leichhardt is not the cheapest place in Sydney to eat, but if you like Italian, there's nowhere better. It's only twenty minutes by bus along Parramatta Road, heading west. Lots of great restaurants!<BR>5. Finally, walk to the south-east corner of Hyde Park (Whitlam Square), and then walk straight up Oxford St for about five short blocks (only ten minutes walk) to Taylor Square. For the next few blocks there are lots of interesting -- and good value -- restaurants....not rock-bottom prices, as it's a trendy area, but certainly better than around the Rocks!<BR>Have a tasty visit!

Mike:<BR>Go to Darling Harbour and eat at the International Food Court. A good number of restaurants in one location with excellent cuisine at very modest prices.<BR>John

Gday Mike,<BR><BR>My recommendation would be this:<BR>Catch a ferry to Manly (a nice activity on it's own). There you will find an abundance of good quality restaraunts. Walk up the corso to the beach front or go down side streets for cheaper eats. Fantastic atmosphere during the day.
