Sydney Apt hotels
Anyone know about Quay West Suites? Or Waldorf Apt hotel on Dowling Street? There is also one on Liverrpool? Alan, maybe you can tell me how long a walk from Dowling Street to the Opera house and if it is uphill, or scenic etc? Is Dowling street too close to King's Cross? Like a previous poster, I have an impressionable 12 year old.
Thanks, Barbara |
We stayed at the Quay West( a few years ago) and loved it.
It really is a five star facility...great locatin,,,right at edge of rock...sits right behind the Regent...but is higher. The kitchen is complete with most everything...granite counters....2 fridges (one is mini bar...one for personal use)... The suite is huge....large living room/dining room with full size dining table (stereo vcr, etc) and large bedroom. We could see harbour bridge from our bed. The washer and dryer are in a separate laundry room right off the kitchen...so its hidden but easily accesible. If you go,you MUST have a harbour veiw. We planned on eating out(there is room service)but we brought back ready cooked meal,,from David Jone's food hall (like Harrods). We added some wine and ate on our patio, looking at the opera house and harbour bridge. |
If you have not already done so I suggest you do a Search at the top of the page for Sydney Apartment Hotels as there is a lot of information available which will be useful for you, especially concerning the Waldorf.

We (myself, wife & 3 kids 12, 9 & 7) stayed at the Waldorf for a few days in June. Facilities fine for a place to stay, but we didn't spend much time in the room. Unheated rooftop pool was OK for a quick plunge after soaking in the (hot) spa or sauna. Location was good for dining - in the spanish quarter, near to China Town & plenty of fast-food on George Street. Woolworth supermarket at "Town Hall", a couple of blocks away, and easy stroll for shopping to Queen victoria building and Central shopping area in one direction, or Paddy's Markets, at the other end of China Town. Location also good to walk to "The Lion King" live stage musical, which is not to be missed! Also reasonable walk to Darling Harbour. We walked Oxford Stret, Kings Cross early evening with our kids, for some local "culture" and had no problems! (Most people only get into trouble in places like that if they go looking for it - IMHO). The Waldorf is, however, a very long walk to the Opera House. You could take it slow by walking to the shopping area, then wandering through Hyde Park and down historic Macquarie Street & through the Botanic Gardens ( a really interesting walk which we did). If you're in a hurry though, a trip on the subway from Town Hall or Museum Stations, or ferry from Darling Harbour are much more efficient and pleasant ways of getting there (esp for a 12 yo!)than rushing straight down George Street! |
Alan is away at present.
I can't identify the Waldorf in Dowling Street - but, presuming you mean South Dowling Street, it's much too far to walk anywhere you'd like to be, unless you're here for the cricket in January at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Our mate, Mucky the Welshman, stayed at the Waldorf in Liverpool Street, and spoke well of it. It is a bit away from Circular Quay and the Rocks area, but convenient to transport. Quay West suites would be the absolute pick, but I imagine there's a fair price differential between them and just about anything else. You gets what you pays for. There are some other apartments in Harrington Street, the Stafford. I'm not sure what they are like - but here's the website: http://www.rendezvoushotels.com/html...dney_index.htm They've been mentioned already on this site, so do a search for them. There have been countless threads on apartments in SYdney. |
Margo,
Thanks for picking up on the detail - Waldorf in Liverpool Street was where we stayed - if this is not the property you were considering, please either disregard my comments, or consider the property that offers all those features!! Cheers, Rob |
Thanks all for such great comments. West Quay quoted me way over my budget (double the going rate for anything between Xmas and New years, even though we'll be gone on the 30th!).
So Waldorf on Liverpool is better located than Dowling street? from the Map it seems hard to tell. Is it walkable from Liverpool to Circular Quay and the bridge and opera house? (walkable to these lazy bones means less then 25 minutes!) I have tried to pull up the other posts concernng Mucky and the waldorf, but my computer is spazzing. Thanks for the advice. Barbara |
Barbara,
As above, it is certainly walkable - I think probably about one mile or so - we did it with our kids, and it is certainly easier at the start of the day than end (I think its more down-hill to get there, but that might have only been my perception) It was certainly harder to get the kids "up" the hill late in the day, heading back to the apartment - that's when the ferry from Circular Quay, which goes under the Harbour Bridge, and via the landing at Luna Park to Darling Harbour is a good option (and as the kids said "the lights look so pretty at night") Cheers, Rob |
Bchen..the Waldorf in Liverpool Street is much closer than South Dowling Street. It is right in the city and handy to Chinatown and the Spanish area as well as not far from Darling Harbour. You can walk everywhere from there and also it is not far from bus and train transport. Have fun !

Hi Bchen,
As Margo rightly says we stayed at the previously unheard of Waldorf last New year for a week. It was a good place to stay at that time of year, the costs all hike up over NYE as you would expect but the Waldorf remained good value. Location is a bit of a walk from Opera house, but transport is pretty good and you are 5 mins from Darling harbour. My daughter was 13 then and we had no problems really with the area, it was quite ok. I found my old trip report which talks about the Waldorf. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34467355 I just hope the link works ;-) Good Luck Muck |
I looked at Waldorf website and I would actually lean toward the North Sydney apartments. 50 metres to ferry terminal, 5 min walk to Milson Point railway...loads of buses ...maybe even quicker to get to Circular Quay plus is it more residential while being just a waterway away from downtown. Option of walking the brige to get to the city, maybe more like a 45 min walk but too busy looking about to notice! Also walking distance to North Sydney pool and Luna Park, great for kids. If you have any reservations about being right in a downtown city environment it would be a better choice, If you love to be in the thick of a city then liverpool street. |
As we speak, I am looking out our window at Quay West Suites, with a view of the bridge and the opera house. It is a fabulous place! We changed hotels from the Medina Grand Sydney, which was a dump! Dirty beyond description, we got a refund from our deposit and left! We are now in a 2 bedroom apt. with a fantastic view (rooms ending in 06 are the best). Circular Quay (the rocks) is by far the best location to be in - all the ferries leave from here. Darling harbor was cute, but very inconvenient for all the ferries.

Interesting about the Medina Grand Sydney. We stayed at the Medina Coogee in April and thought it was terrific.
