Sydney Airport for International Flight

All good things must come to an end. Our flight home via Seoul on Asiana is on Saturday at 10:20 am. How much time do we need to allow to get to our gate?

tripplanner001 Mar 11th, 2017 02:10 PM

Wow, it seems your time in Australia flew by. Where are you staying in Sydney? From Circular Quay via taxi on a Saturday morning will take about 30 minutes, if not a little less, assuming no road closures, etc. By train it is about the same. Sydney Airport is quite easy; to get from the ticket counter to the gate took me about 45 minutes, but that was because I was at the tax refund office for about 10. I did not check luggage though. If you are at or around Circular Quay and leave by 7, you should be able to get at the gate fairly easily, even if there is an unforeseen bump along the way.

Also note that the international and domestic buildings are not linked as it is with our airports at home. Make sure you go to the international terminal.

Some folks are surprised to have to go through a passport check on exiting, just like you did when entering the country. Now you know... Otherwise it's like any reasonable airport you've ever been in, just leave plenty of time, be there at 8AM no later, you never know...

Michel, I think most of USB who travel internationally aren't surprised by it, although I have noticed in the last couple of years that this is becoming less frequent. We don't do it in the U.S.

tripplanner001 Mar 11th, 2017 06:16 PM

Should be "...most of us...". Sorry for the autocorrect.

yestravel Mar 11th, 2017 10:00 PM

Thanks, both of you. We're in an apt right near the Museum Station.

TP, We left DC on 24 January and it seems like last week. Doesn't matter how much time we have it flies by and so much left undone and unseen, thank you again for your detailed Tr. We referred to it often.

Michel-I appreciate all your suggestions on a variety of threads. You have provided a wealth of info.

You're welcome. I'm glad you found my report useful. If you are traveling light, then Museum to the airport on the train should not take more than 15 minutes. Taxi from Hyde Park should be no more than 30 assuming no road closures. If you leave by 7, you will have enough time and not feel rushed.

How close to the International terminal is the train stop?

Bokhara2 Mar 12th, 2017 03:54 AM

It's in the terminal building. I think you alight on the departure level. If not, just take the lift up/ down to it. Don't take luggage larger than a carry-on on the escalators.

There is a stop at the Domestic Terminal & the Internatiinsl is next. There are announcements & a display in th carriage advising of next stops.

It's not much more to go by taxi than to take the train. For some unfathomably stupid reason, (especially considering Australia's environmentalist pretensions) Sydney allows the airport to charge an enormous per person surcharge for embarking and disembarking the trains at the two airport stations.

yestravel Mar 13th, 2017 12:26 PM

Thanks! Yes, we were looking at the price comparison and was surprised so little difference.

yestravel Mar 15th, 2017 03:51 PM

Turns out there is track work on Saturday so that option is out.

Bokhara2 Mar 15th, 2017 04:23 PM

I'd just take a cab, yestravel. At that hour, you'd be able to hail one on the street. Perhaps go up to the nearest cross street, so you have 2 streets catchment area.

Or call Taxis Combined 10 - 15 mins before you want to leave.

Thanks! We'll try hailing a taxi con the street. The Merton serviced apts said they'd get one for us if need be. They are around the corner.

I'll check Uber first thing in the am and perhaps they won't do the surge pricing as someone mentioned on TA. The one thing I really stress about traveling is getting to the airport in our return.

Bokhara2 Mar 15th, 2017 07:45 PM

At that hour on a Saturday morning Uber would have 0 excuse for surge pricing!

yestravel Mar 15th, 2017 09:15 PM

Hopefully you are correct. In the US they would use the excuse of the train being non Operative. I use Lyft more in the US.

northie Mar 16th, 2017 12:47 AM

$60 for taxi as against $34 for train - travelled last Friday !

yestravel Mar 17th, 2017 11:21 AM

Surge pricing for Uber. Taxi was $42 and about 20 minutes. We'll be off shortly!

Bokhara2 Mar 17th, 2017 04:16 PM

Good! Safe travels home & I hope our paths cross again. It was such a pleasure to meet you both.
