Spit Bridge to Manly walk

We are interested in doing the Spit Bridge to Manly walk, but may not have time to do the entire 6 miles. I'd appreciate suggestions of shorter versions that hit the best parts.

Take the ferry or jet cat to manly
walk across the road at manly wharf to the taxi rank
get a cab to clontarf reserve
get the cell number of the cab driver
walk from clontarf to forty baskets beach
call the cab driver to pick you up
have a drink at the wharf pub in manly
catch the ferry back to circular quay at sunset

download a walk guide at the sydney ferries website

on the first morning you are in sydney go to the sydney harbour national parks centre at cadmans cottage and get a walk guide/map.

Did the entire walk in spring 2005 the other way from Manly to Spit Bridge... absolutely stunning view, highly recommended.

I've seen some recommedations of going from Spit to Manly and others for the reverse direction. Opinions?

Judi,
I always think it is nicer doing the Spit to Manly walk - as then you can sit and enjoy a well earned drink/coffee at one of the many nice cafes on Manly Wharf. However, if your time is limited then John's suggestion makes good sense.
