Special Anniversary

Hi folks,

We will be staying in Sydney for 5 nights in May (16-21) at the Quay West. The 16th is our 10 year anniversary. What would be VERY special to do that evening? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

We stayed at the Quay West and loved it!!

Our meal to remember was dining out on our patio while looking at HArbour Bridge and the Opera House.

Hi, Mark!
We had a Canadian friend stay with us during the Olympics 18 months ago -- her "Sydney highlight" was a climb at sunset to the top of the Harbour Bridge. You climb up at about 5 o'clock, and by the time you get to the top, the lights are on. It costs about $100 each and you have to book in advance... there is probably a website, but I don't know what it is. (Maybe someone else could help here? Otherwise you could try the NSW Govt Tourist Bureau website.)

When you come down, about 7 o'clock, a romantic dinner at the Bennelong (the restaurant in the Opera House complex -it's the third and smallest "shell"- might end the day well. You probably won't have time to actually see a show at the Opera House that evening, as everything starts around 8 p.m., but since you've already outlayed so much on the climb, and the Bennelong is by no means cheap, you probably won't feel like spending any more money that night anyway! Finish the evening with a stroll around the Rocks area, on the other side of Circular Quay (almost under the bridge).

Have a wonderful anniversary. You have picked a great month to come to Sydney -- getting cool, but usually dry.

I loved the bridge climb so much, I bought their screen saver, so here is the web site:
www.bridgeclimb.com
I second this as a very romantic and memorable thing to do. go on the "last climb of the day" (as opposed to a night climb). When you book, schedule yourself 1 hour before sunset, as you check in, dress and train for 45 minutes to an hour before you start walking up. You'll get a view going up and the lights of the city coming down!

Cost is $125 to $150 Aus, and worth every penny!

I totally agree with the harbour bridge climb. I've done the last one of the day and it's magic. Make sure you book well in advance.

For the evening, I would reccomend Cafe Sydney. The food is fantastic, great atmosphere and an amazing view over circular quay, opera house, harbour bridge etc. Make sure you ask for a table on the balcony (they have heaters if it's a bit cold).

H
