South Island guided hike worth the cost?

Can anyone weigh in on whether you think the cost of a multi-day guided hike of the Milford Sound and Routeburn tracks is worth it? Since I don't feel up to lugging in my own supplies (other than gear) it seems like the only alternative. I'm trying to convince myself it'll be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but the price tag is a big one to swallow.
If we do it, this seven-day trek will be the first week of a six-week trip, with the remainder spent exploring in a campervan.
Thanks!

Just an update: I booked the guided trip and the air tickets and we're on our way, so please ignore the above question. But stay tuned for more as the planning continues.
Cheers!

I'd go with a guided trip Swanny as the enjoyment factor of having your bags carried, food prepared and a decent bed and hot shower is priceless.
If the 65 means 1965 then we are about the same age and I think I am getting past the gung ho tramping trips of my youth where we ate from a can, slept on a thin mat and stayed unwashed. Think of it as helping the New Zealand economy and supporting small tourism businesses. I'll pay for a guided tour when I get down there one day.
You will be more relaxed and refreshed to really enjoy the experience!

Hi Tasmangirl,
Yep, that's what the 65 stands for. I hear ya on the pitch for supporting a NZ company. I completely agree. It's just a little harder to get used to for a frugal freak like me who can make a dollar, even a Canadian one, stretch about 20 different ways if I put enough time into the research. But I'm reaching the age when I realize that a little splurge now and then can have a big payoffs on the experiential front, and I suspect this is one of those, judging by the reviews.
Thanks for all your help along the way.

You made a good decision! We did the Ultimate Hikes guided Milford Track hike earlier this year and really enjoyed it. In addition to having the comforts of a bed, shower and cooked meals, we also enjoyed getting to know members of our group at meals and in the evenings at the lodges. We thought it was a really well run operation.
