Sounds of Silence and bugs

I have read so many mixed reviews about this dinner. How bad are the bugs in mid May?

Bokhara2 Apr 29th, 2010 10:50 PM

Probably too cold for "bugs" at night in May.

It can get very chilly in the Outback at night and the mean min. temp. for Uluru in May is 7.9 degrees celsius. I agree with Bokhara2, probably too cold for bugs.

Now the question is, is it worth over $800? That's what it would cost for our party.

DownUnder Apr 30th, 2010 11:06 PM

Well nothing comes cheap these days and you are in the Outback, an area you are probably not going to visit again in a hurry. I think it is about $160 pp and having experienced it a few years ago it is something I have not forgotten. A lot of it is about the view of the Olgas and Uluru at sunset while sipping champagne.

We'll do it! Trying to see if they have a family rate.

We went to Uluru in 2008 in March and the bugs were bad. We needed to buy the mosquito netting for the face and that was a help.
The area is very expensive and I do not think that I would do it again. The main idea is that it is a place of spirituality and not just a tourist site.
we drove from Alice Springs and that was also an experience and then King's Canyon, another experience.
If $$$ is a priority, then maybe visit another place as this eats up a lot of the budget, and we did cheap accomodations.

It seems like it is going to be really cold at night in Uluru. How does one stay warm through dinner?

prue May 13th, 2010 09:57 PM

Wear warm clothes!

Drink red wine or whisky; leave the beer for the kids with higher heart rates.

I have not, so sorry, filed a trip report. However, I must say this was one of the most memorable nights we have ever had as a family. Well worth it!!

Glad you enjoyed it Misha! How were the bugs and were you warm enough?

matkinusa1 Jan 20th, 2011 05:51 PM

We were there in the fall, and there were no bugs and it was comfortable. The night sky is unbelievable. It is the most crisp, sharp view of the heavns I have ever seen. The silence was suprising, didn't even hear any critters, just total silence. It was worth the money. As for the cost, my view is, I'm only going to be there once.I flew half way around the world, 13 hours in the cattle car, I was going to see it all.

Great to hear you enjoyed it! We went to Uluru in Winter, rather than Autumn, and didn't find there were many, if any, flies or mosquitoes.

misha2 Jan 23rd, 2011 08:40 AM

We were there in May and did not experience any insects at all. Matkinusa1, I agree. The sharp views of the skies were fabulous. Plus, the food exceeded my expectations.
