Soooooooo Confused
I am getting mixed messages about visiting Melbourne. I only have a total of 10 days in Australia and just don't know how to split my time. My daughter is studying in Sydney but will travel with us wherever we go-she is totally against Melbourne-says it's no different than going to Boston for the weekend. HELP

Yep she is right!

The last response is a bit harsh in my opinion, but then again - that's what this board is about - opinions. I have lived in both Sydney & Melb. (which by the way is a great city w/ a completely different feel from Sydney...and also, what's wrong w/ Boston?????) and despite the fact there is much to do in both cities, I would try to see some of the more diverse (??) parts of Australia. If you only have 10 days & considering your circumstances, I would do Sydney & then something a bit different. Not sure what time of year you will be coming, but you could take a few days trip up to Port Douglas (Reef), or go to Ayers Rock/Outback. Tasmania might be another option. Enjoy your trip.

Well here's another. I went to Melbourne and I could have passed on it. washington DC is my home and I've been in Boston many times and don't get me wrong, I like DC and Boston but I was not overly fond of Melbourne. Sydney is not like a big city and is so very enjoyable - Port Douglas is small and close to that great barrier reef. I'd opt for those two and have a marvelous time. Ayers rock is difficult and expensive to get to and then it's even more expensive to stay at. Tasmania offers a lot

Hi Sally,
I saw Sydney, Adelaide/Kangaroo Is., Darwin/Kakadu/Litchfield, Pt Douglas/Cairns and Melbourne in one very busy(and very enjoyable) month.

Melbourne was ok, but yes, it really is just one more city. I agree w/Leslie's advice. Given your time constraints, visit the parts of Australia that set it apart from other countries. Fly up to Queensland and see the reef and the rainforest...OR...Darwin/Kakadu...OR... Adelaide and Kangaroo Island.

Enjoy!
Debbie
