Solo traveler needs help planning 12 days in Fiji
 

I just learned that my travel partner will not be albe to go with me to Fiji. I'm looking for places that a 40 year old woman will be safe and have fun. I've always been a "Fly by the seat of my pants" traveler and I don't usually stay in resorts, but would it be a good idea this trip? Thanks for your help

Fiji would be fine for a solo woman traveller - if you give me some idea of when you are going, for how long and what sort of things /places you are interested in.... I could suggest lots of places.

eliza3 Thanks so much for responding! I'll be there the middle of July for 12 days. I like most outdoor sports, but no diving. I was looking at the Yasawa Island Group. I need something budget but not dorms. Otherwise I'm open to anywhere on Fiji. I like to hang out for 4+ days before going to a different location. That usually gives me time to see local stuff.

I went to Fiji for a party (as you do LOL) & stayed an extra week to explore.
Stayed on the Coral Coast (Bedara), hired a car & went to Ba, Suva & lots of other day trips.

Also a female solo traveller - no probs; just use your common sense & don't do things you wouldn't do at home.

There's a budget resort quite near the big one (whose name escapes me) around the corner from Bedara. It's in a sensational location - self catering cottages. I'll dig up the details & post for you later on. Sorry - got CRAFT disease this morning :)

You'd think I was their PR agent (LOL) - I'm not & haven't even stayed there. But friends have and it's in such a great location at such a bargain rate, I just think it'd be great for a week or so if you're not looking for the "resort" experience.

Hi - agree no prob to travel around in Fiji as a female solo. If you really like to busk it, then you can. No probs. But helps if you have some idea of where you want to go beforehand so as not to waste time.

I flew in, found somewhere to stay for that first night; Travelled around, booking nothing in advance. Loved Ovalou - the ferry trip there and (big splurge) the flight back to Suva.

Never got to any of those well known island destinations - didn't fancy the budget offerings and didn't fancy/didn't want to spend the money on the upmarket ones.

Plenty to enjoy in Fiji without the resorts. Depends on your interests, and how much you enjoy not knowing where you will spend your next night.

Fuzzylogic (love the name) When you went to Ovalau how long did you stay and what are your must see places there?

Thanks bohkara Sandy Point sounds like a good base camp and the rates are reasonable.

sorry to be so long getting back to you - I would second the sandy point beach cottages - have not stayed there but stayed near (Tubakula -not recommended) and walked past. Advantages are self catering if you want but walking distance to a number of other eating places ranging from Outrigger (at the expensive end) to some along the old main road between Nadi and Suva. I'd stay away from the family and kids resorts - you don't say when you are going but bear in mind July will be Australian and NZ school holidays. Generalising - that would be along the Coral Coast at resorts like Hideaway and most of the Mamanucas. Some of the best beaches are in the Yasawas and places like Octopus and Oarsmans have wonderful beaches but are booked up ages ahead. Octopus has shared tables which could be good for you and an interesting range of people. Another place you could consider is Bekana Island resort off the coast from Lautoka. I am not a particular fan of Ovalau as it doesn't have a beach but it is an interesting town and if you were to combine with other places - Caqelai is close by and very cheap and meant to be very friendly. My favourite place is Nananu-i-ra island off the coast from Raki Raki - about a 2 - 2.5 hour drive from Nadi.

Lucy - apols for delay. I'm not sure there are any "must see" places on Ovalou - that's sort of the point. Just somewhere to go, and meet people and drink cava, and wander the main street. Oh, and yes, take a guided walk up into the hills to check out the flora and fauna and visit a village and have lunch.

There were trips you could do to other islands with very basic accommodation.

Things may have changed.

But I liked it.
