size conversion from U.S. to Australian for women

I'm thinking ordering some clothing from an Australian online store. I wear a women's size 14 U.S. Can somebody please tell me what size that would be in Australia. Thank you.

Let me stress that as a male who can't remember his own shoe size I can't claim any expertise in this area.

I did however find an online conversion site (www.onlineconversion.com/clothing_womens. htm) which lists US size 14 ("large/x-large") as Australian size 18. Perhaps if you e-mail the vendor they can confirm this for you?

Marigold, the Australian sizes are a bit ad-hoc, with different designers apparently using different scales. Eg, in my current wardrobe I have (Aust). 10 - 16 and they all fit!

If I were you, I'd ask for / give your measurements (in cm). Most people are very obliging and this could help make sure you have the right fit.

Good Luck :)

Hi - doesn't this sizing thing make you mad!! Like Bokhara I have to say that the sizing varies enormously.

I'm a US size 0/2. Aus size 6 is usually too big, and that's the smallest they make. AAAggghh. I have a feeling that the less skinny you are the more the sizes converge. The best thing is to do a google and try and find a conversion chart.

Happy shopping.

Hi Fuzzylogic, the thing that frustrates me most is the variance in sizes not only between designers here, but within some as well. I bought a well known designer's dress in a 12, and a 10 jacket as the 12 was huge.

I have a friend with your problem, and she's given up trying to buy good things years ago and has them made. She buys some casual stuff (jeans etc.,) in the kids/teens section, and I know she has a hard time finding really nice things that fit properly.
Have you had any success buying US clothing online?

Hi Marigold, Our complaints must have been seen through the ether - one of our B'fast TV shows was discussing this very thing this morning! Think they said they were going to approach designers & mfrs.

Will be interesting to see what the "industry response" is - my guess is that they "undersize" to appeal to those who would like to be wear size (or 3 :) ) smaller than they are.
