Rotorua - Whakarewarewa Thermal Area or Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland

We are traveling with our 9 1/2 yr old and have one day in which we would like to see one of these places with enough time left in the day to go enjoy the Skyline Skyride gondola & luge before dark. Which should we choose and how much time should we expect to spend at either place? Is there perhaps another thermal/geyser area anyone might suggest as well? Thank you, Gabriella

We went to Te Whakarewarewa in the evening for their concert and hangi, which was pretty cool. They lit up the thermal area for us before we went back to Rotorua for the evening.

The next day we spent the morning at Waiotapu, which we really enjoyed.

You would probably get a bit of Maori culture if you choose the first option, but Waiotapu, IMO, has more spectacular geothermal features.

I agree with the above. If you have the time, I reckon the best thermal area is the Orakei-Korako Valley which is about 40 mins out of Rotorua. It's well worth the extra drive to get there. You could do this in the morning (I assume you're staying in Rotorua the night before) and still have plenty of time after lunch for Skyline Gondola and luging.
