Restaurant for special birthday
 

We will be in Sydney for my husband's 74th birthday in May. Can anyone suggest a fun/good restaurant? He loves Italian food. Thank you, Vicky

In the city, bel mondo. Although this has changed hands, and may not be as good. Expensive, too!

In Leichhardt (Italian suburb), Portofino, or Grappa.

Hi Margo, Thanks for the information. We are staying at the Four Seasons. First time to Australia, so don't know if that is a good hotel or not. I've seen some reviews that say other places are much better, but I reserved before checking with Australian Foderites.

Definitely check out these two options: Beppi's and Buon Ricardo. Both arguably the best italian in Australia. Beppi's is an institution, and both are definitely wonderful for a special birthday.

I would second the suggestion of Beppis - it is an institution in Sydney and renowned for its authentic Italian cuisine and wonderful service.
It also seems to be off the regular 'tourist trail' .

Four Seasons is a great location - right near Circular Quay and the Rocks, and close to all public transport.

I've never stayed there, but, in January this year, a friend stayed there, and was ill. The hotel was quite good in arranging a doctor, light meal, etc. Her room had a great view of the Harbour, although I imagine those on the other side have no view. But - a hotel is only for sleeping!

There's an expensive restaurant in the hotel, Kables, but I have found the food to be quite ordinary for the cost.

bel mondo has the advantage that you can walk to it - the others require taxis.

Beppi's, though, has a great reputation.

I'd really go Beppi's. I've been to Bel Mondo, and found it rather ordinary and, to be honest, to have way too much attitude. It's well on the tourist track as well.

Thanks to everyone on the suggestions. I found a web site for Beppis and e-mailed them for reservations. They replied with a table in their wine cellar. Sounds good! Has anyone eaten there rather than the main dining room?
