Are you talking day-trips or cruises for several days. Both are available from loads of operators. We used Poseidon out of Port Douglas for a day-trip and had a great time. Their web site (www.poseidon-cruises.com.au)has details of what you can expect.
Its a 3-hour flight from Sydney to Cairns. You have a choice of Ansett or Qantas, each having several flights a day. An advance purchase fare bought in Australia should cost about $400 to $500 return.
We took the 25 day tour of NZ and Australia with Trafalgar. We went on the penguin parade In Melbourne. It was cold and raining, but beautiful, am so glad we did it. With Trafalgar, it was Australia $83, not including dinner, but we stopped at a nice little Italian restaurant on the way back and the food was great. Will never get back, so my philosphy is to do it while you can. Enjoy!

Don't know when you intend being in the SydneyGBR area but there are great deals at this time for internal domestic fares.

Our three day GBR cruise on Coral Princess was booked through P&O Resorts at www.poresorts.com.au. It was the highlight of our trip. The people, the accommodations, the food, the reef, the fun, were all perfect. If you have specific questions, drop me an email.

Brian - check out www.kangaroocruises.com.au. We have done this cruise twice and loved it. You can do the whole 7 days to Cape York or stop at Lizard Island and return to Cairns. The snorkeling is at 7 different very out-of-the-way places along the reef.
