Reef Magic vs. Sunlover for Great Barrier Reef

I think I may be trying to decide between these to GBR operators, Reef Magic vs. Sunlover. I realize Sunlover has a larger boat, takes more passengers, Reef Magic has fewer passengers, but that does not concern me so much. I am mostly interested in which operation takes you to the better reef, more fish, etc. I am also taking my Mom who will not be getting in the water, so I need good viewing opportunites for her such as underwater observation area, semi-submersible, and/or glass bottom boat. Who has the best lunch? Also, I plan to go diving, so which has the best diving progam and dive sites? I am looking for as much information as possible to help me decide. From what I've already read on this forum, both seem like very good operators, therefore, how do I choose between the two? Thanks!

Having been on both, would say Reef Magic. It's pontoon is on a particularly good reef site, both for snorkellers and divers, has the semi-sub and glass bottom boat and underwater viewing area for your mother.

Locally owned and crew can't do enough to help and does not market to package tour groups.

Swdke,

as usual, Pat is spot on -- I've also been on both and Reef Magic's much better - BY FAR.

Hope this is helpful!

Agree with previous two posters, have been with both and loved Reef Magic - food was outstanding, and crew couldn't be more helpful

Thank you for the replies recommending Reef Magic. With such recommendations, I believe I will make my booking with Reef Magic. But, I am curious, what makes Reef Magic stand out over Sunlover?

Hi Swdke,

To answer your question about preferences, here are my impressions of Sunlover:

1. Most important - there are literally no fish to see at the location they go to.

2. Following that statement, I'm sure the majority of fish have relocated to another area where there aren't hordes of tourists splashing around in the water on a daily basis.

3. They have crammed the boat to full capacity because they cater to groups - primarily Asian groups.

4. Their buffet is some of the worst looking food I've ever seen; and because of their market, the food's also heavily influenced in that direction, which is fine if you like a bowl of congee for lunch. In the deli style buffet, I couldn't tell WHAT kind of lunchmeat that was but it didn't look good! (some sort of mystery meat) I decided to play it safe and had some cheese on a roll.

5. As you said your Mom doesn't get in the water, you may have been interested in those "diving helmets" they feature - I can tell you that those things are quite heavy and not suited for anyone with neck/shoulder problems or an older individual.

Hope this is helpful!
