Recommended transportation for the Blue Mountains

Hello,

I am traveling to Australia the 1st two weeks of Australia. My plans include 2 days in the Blue Mountains, staying overnight in Leura. I'll be going there from Sydney and then taking a flight from Canberra to Melbourne. I would love to get recommendations on transportation. Should I take a train there and explore the mountains using the trains/buses? Or is a car needed so I should rent a car in Sydney for the part of the trip?

I appreciate your recommendations!

If you are going for 2 nights, I think a car would be useful & give you more flexibility than relying in buses & trains around the Blue Mountains.

Are you planning to go Sydney - Blue Mountains- Sydney - Canberra,
Or from the Blue Mountains to Canberra?

I've never used the buses in the Blue Mountains, but it looks like the explorer bus runs every half an hour:

Trolley tours appears to be a bus an hour:

Trains probably have the same level of frequency, taking you to the main towns and not necessarily near to the attractions. Katoomba station, for example, is not close to Echo Point and the Three Sisters.

I agree with Bokhara, if it's August when you are coming, you don't want to be standing around in the cold waiting for buses in the mountains.

We took the train to Katoomba, where we were staying ,and used the hop-on hop-off bus to get to the major attractions and starting point for a couple of hikes. It goes through Leura. We found the train and the bus were frequent enough to suit our needs. Our accommodation was far enough from the station that we took a cab on arrival but otherwise walked around town.

Thanks all!

I'll take a look at the different options.

Bokhara - we are going Sydney to Blue Mountains to Canberra. Any thoughts because of that plan?
