Reasonable rental accommodation Sydney or surrounds!!

My son-in-law currently living in New York is going to be doing a Masters of Music at Sydney Consevatorium of Music starting next week. Because this is a research degree Australian and New Zealand citizens don't have to pay fees but obviously DSIL still has rent, food etc to pay. He is looking for accommodation in the area, but as he only has one face to face class per week he doesn't necessarily have to be close by.

From the research he has done it seems like a room in a house is about $ 200 so he is now looking at living in the Blue Mountains where it is cheaper. (By the way my DD is not going with him, she has a 4 month music gig at the Park Hyatt in South Korea from mid October). They will meet up when DSIL has finished this next semester. Just wondering if any of the Fodorites who live in Sydney have any suggestions as to where he might found a cheap place to live, that isn't in a very rough neighbourhood, and may not be as far away as the Blue Mountains. He would like to be able to play some gigs while he is there, and also teach some adult guitar students, so being closer if probably a better move. He would prefer a place on his own, will not have a car.

Hi Nelsonian
How long does your son in law need accommodation for?

Single occupancy for <$200 week is a bit optimistic in Sydney. However, he might find something closer to his budget on Airbnb than through the normal commercial avenues.

The Con may also have some ideas. Has he contacted them?

Inner west ( Ultimo, Glebe, Newtown, Chippendale, Waterloo ) & Surry Hills to Maroubra are popular with Uni Students at Sydney, UTS & NSW.

Nelsonian, in the short term, this might suit.

My daughter worked for YHA for a while and if she and her husband were going to the city to see a show etc, they'd book in here.

It is a two year course, but uni semester's are relatively short!! He has got AirBNB for the first week or so, then will want something a bit more permanent. Thanks for the links.

Much easier for him to look once he's here. There will probably be other people in the same situation, he will be able to make contacts & suss out what's available for how much.

Where is his Airbnb?

nelsonian Jul 20th, 2014 04:38 PM

The AirBNB is in Paramatta close to a cousin. I think he can stay with his cousin for a couple of weeks but not when he first gets there. He is an adult student (37) so probably doesn't want to live with younger students.

The University of Sydney has an accommodation office, he should contact them in the first instance.

Hopefully he will complete his degree before the changes to the funding of postgraduate degrees cuts in!

he was going to defer it Susan but decided to do it now or he might miss out.

when does that cut come in, is there a link anywhere.

Very good thinking on his part. It's not clear yet how different universities are going to behave. There's been a call at Sydney University for a convocation of all alumni to try to persuade the vice-chancellor not to raise fees (the first of such meetings in 60 years). I'm not sure how that is going, or if it will be effective.

I work at a rival institution, the rumour there is that so-called research intensive universities will most likely pick up the fees for research students. It will be a sad day for higher education if that happens as it will reintroduce a two-tier system that was overturned in 1989.

Nelsonian, did your son in law find digs?

Looking for someone else, I came across this on Airbnb & thought of him.

It's a share, but one of the owners is doing a Sound & Music Design degree.
Thought there might be some synergy & it would be a great location for the Con.

No he is still looking Bokahara2, I think he is trying to find a studio for less than $ 200 a week!!!!!

Bokhara2 Aug 1st, 2014 01:31 AM

Good luck with that, Nelsonian.

I doubt $28/night is going to buy much in the way of single occupancy in Sydney. Like to think I'm wrong, though.

Is your son in law going to work on his off-days?

nelsonian Aug 3rd, 2014 01:10 AM

He is going to teach guitar, play some gigs, do some busking. He played the other night in a cafe for a meal. Apparently the band hadn't turned up so he offered to play for food!.
