I always tell my North American friends to not miss the zoo. You can take a ferry out there so you also get to see the beautiful harbo(u)r.

Take the ferry also to Manly so you can walk around the beach. There are shops and restaurants nearby too. If you get a multiple use travel pass you can get on the various ferries, trains and buses at a lower rate and with onlyone pass. Check out the Sydney website on the internet to get more information.

Hi Melanie
Here are my suggestions some depend on finances and this is if you have 2 full days.
1. Visit Darling Harbour in the morning with the Aquarium and other sites, catch a bite of lunch in the Market Place there. Next head to Circular Quay and the Rocks. Depending on times, take an afternoon Coffee cruise of the Harbour and walk the Rocks. Alternative is to book an Opera tour. Have dinner at the Rocks and schedule a Bridge Climb (make reservations early for the climb if you want it). Later visit the Amp tower.
2. Visit the zoo and the beachs as suggested above. If anything interesting to you, take in a performance at the opera.

Have fun!!

Depending on how much to spend in Sydney? Here are some suggestions.
At the Circular Quay. There are two explorer buses avaiable. If you have about 2-3 hours. Hop onto the Sydney Explorer (The Red Bus) or Bondi Explorer (The Blue Bus). Takes you around all the important sites around Sydney. they cost around $15 for the day. And it is a narrated trip around Sydney. Recommend for the first timers. =)

Hi Melanie.,
You definitely want to get a Sydney pass for the buses and ferries. You do want to take the red explorer bus and get on and off the various stops you like around Sydney. The blue explorer bus goes to Bondi beach it is much prettier than Manly. There are some beauatiful stops along the way and you can get on and off and it comes around every few minutes, as does the red bus. Take a ferry cruise and see the harbour at nite. It is breathtaking and be sure you have high speed film. 2-400 doesn't cut it. We did not get good pictures, just beautiful memories. Depending on how much time you take on the buses, you could squeeze in a trip to Manly in the late afternoon and watch the sun go down and have dinner at one of the little bistros by the beach. It is pretty, but if you don't have time for both, go to Bondi. Trust me I was just there in April. Don't do the zoo, rather go to a wildlife sanctuary, like Featherdale, and see the native animals. There are much better zoos here, and I think you'd probably rather see the native fauna.
