Private Tour Guides Australian Coast
 

Taking cruise circumnavigating Australia (Sydney to Sydney) in March and would appreciate recommendations for private guides in the following sites:
Brisbane, Whitsunday Island, Cains, Benoa, Broome, Exmouth, Perth, Esperance, Darwin, Portland, Melbourne, Geelong, Tasmania, Eden and two ports in P.New Guinea Alotau and Port Moresby. I hope there is one good company that does most or all of these ports but individual personal experience would be great.

Hi Martin,
I think you will find most people on this board like to plan & do their exploring independently, so you may not see many personal experiences.
That, of course depends on a number of factors, not least the available time in each location.

However, if you can give us a little more detail, such as:
How many people are in your party?
How long will you be in each port?

We may be able to offer some useful suggestions.
A good start may be simply googling "private tour guides" & each destination.
And the FAQs in each destination here & on Trip Advisor, to help see what's available that would best suit your interests in each port of call.

*The Whitsundays is a group of islands, only a few of which are commercially inhabited. My guess is that you will probably be visiting the largest, Hamilton Island, or the more exclusive Hayman.

* Tasmania is a State, not a city. Where you are berthing here & the length of your stay will be particularly important.

Another suggestion is to email the visitors' centres in each port and ask for their help.
In the meantime, here's some suggestions. In Brisbane, we took the ferry into the city and then to Southbank. Easily filled in a day just wandering around.
In Cairns, our ship docked right in the centre of town. Again it was easy to walk around the town - nice art gallery in the main street and plenty of places to stop for a coffee.
In Broome, shuttle buses were provided to get between docking and the town. There is a hop-on/hop-off bus around town plus another bus to take you to Cable Beach. Spend the morning having a look around town, particularly Chinatown then get the bus to Cable Beach for lunch.
In Perth, the ships dock at Fremantle and it's very easy to spend your time just wandering around Fremantle which is a really nice place with lots of old buildings. Another choice would be to get the ferry into Perth, or take a taxi to Kings Park which is well worth visiting, and then bus into the CBD.
Esperance is a small town, not a lot to see but a pleasant place to wander around.
In Darwin, shuttle buses were provided into the CBD. I'd recommend getting a taxi to the museum/art gallery, then head back into town for a wander around the CBD.
In Hobart (Tasmania), the ships dock right in the centre of town. If you like modern art, then I'd recommend taking the ferry to MONA art gallery. Have a walk along Salamanca Place. Hobart also has a good art gallery a short walk from the dock.
In Alotau, most people chose to visit the cultural display which (from memory) cost about $40 each.

Doesn't your cruise provider have recommendations?

AAT Kings has tours everywhere in Australia (or so it seems) - it is ubiquitous. Kinda like Vegemite, but AAT Kings neither smells nor tastes as bad . . .

What kind of time will you have at each stop?

Thanks: we would like to take private (2) tours as my wife has some difficulty in walking longer distances. Taking ship tours (free package) in Alotau, Perth, Kangaroo Island, Melbourne and Hobart. Am on Cruise Critic almost daily and so far have only hooked up on Komodo. Most of our stops are at least 8 hours. ATT Kings does hotel based tours from what I could see. Any further suggestions would be helpful.

For Melbourne, you might try Escape Discovery Adventures . I've not used them, but they have good reviews.

UK Friends are going to use them for a Great Ocean Road tour as they only have one day.
