Port Douglas/Palm Cove accommodation

I am going to either Port Douglas or Palm Cove next year and have looked at lots of apartments mentioned on Fodor's Travel Talk. In many cases the places look fabulous but are too expensive for us Aussies. Does anyone know of really nice apartments that are between $150 and $200 a night (1 bedroom)? Thank you.

Hi ishki,
PD and PC have been the topic of great debate on this forum and they are both fabulous places to stay.
We stayed in PC which we found to be perfect. The oasis at Palm Cove was a beautiful place to stay and just a few mins walk from the beach. Not sure if the price fits with your needs but have a look at the website below. Many apartments and resorts are facing the beach and they are all lovely. Have a look for yourself.

Happy planning

Hi Ishki

Travelling to FNQ can sure hit us locals in the hip pocket.

When I was in Palm Cove I saw a place called the Saray'i which was absolute esplanade frontage right in the middle of it.

It looked totally gorgeous but they had a sign outside stating room rates were from a low low price like $45 at the time. I could not reconcile the price advertised with the beatiful building I was looking at so presumed it was some place without ensuite or whatever.

However I just had a look for it and on their website they show studio rooms from $89, standard $125.00 then up to superior rooms upto $200 with ocean views.

You may need a second opinion from someone that actually went inside but it really did look a sensational bargain from outside.

In Port Douglas I saw an older style motel on the road into Port but cannot recall it's name. It was near a Japanese restaurant if anyone has better local knowledge than I do. It may present good value though a Macrossan street location would be way better.

It is a great location though, if you haven't been before I guarantee you will have fun and go broke. :)

Thanks so much for the helpful info. I haven't been a Fodorite for long and am having a great time reading everyone's questions and advice. I was planning a trip to Athens and Santorini (which subsequently fell through) and learned so much on Fodors Travel Talk that I almost felt I had been there! Thanks again!

hi ishki
I recommend Beach Terraces on Garrick St, about a minutes stroll to Four Mile Beach, a short walk to Macrossan st.
Have stayed there three times in a 2 bedroom apartment, has all the facilities that you would need (fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, dryer, linen etc). It is small 4 star property, around 20 apartments. The going rate is around $180 per night for a one bedroom, but I recently saw it on wotif for $150 per night
Further along Garrick St is the Balboa Apartments, I will post a link for you, they have a limited number of one bedroom apartments if I recollect correctly

I think that PD would be a cheaper option as you have accees to a full supermarket as well as the Sunday market for fruit and vegetables

I recently stayed at Garrick House on Garrick St. Very close to beach and town. We had a large 2 BR Apartment for $220/nt. Their 1 bedrooms are $130-$170. Website www.Garrickhouse.com.au. It was very clean and bright with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, balcony. I highly recommend it.

We stopped in Palm Cove for lunch and to look around. There's a lot more to do in Port Douglas. Glad we stayed there.

Hi,
the Peninsula is a bit higher than you want but it was well worth it.
