Please help with Adelaide
 

Hello All!! I will be in Australia in late March of 2005. I will be in Adelaide for about 4 nights and looking for good accommodation for a single room ranging in price of $40-80 (US dollars). Can anyone please assist me with this. Is the price too low? I don't want to be too far from public transportation. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance!! :)

My 2c worth - first, get hold of an Adelaide city map (sorry, don't have a website to hand, but a quick search should turn one up). Anywhere within the city "square mile" bounded by North, East, South and West Terraces won't be far from a bus stop. I'd go for the north half if possible, preferably within a few blocks of King William Street, which bisects the city centre north-south. The north-eastern bit around East Terrace/Rundle Street in particular is pretty lively, with lots of places to eat, likewise Hindley Street within a few blocks of KW Street.

North Adelaide, across the river from the city centre, is also good. Locations in the suburbs are also likely to be reasonably well served by public transport and may be cheaper, but will involve you in extra travelling time.

Next, check www.wotif.com, which specialises in discounted room rates bookable within 2 weeks of arrival, and make up a short list, limiting your search to rooms under AU$100 (currently about US$78). I wouldn't worry about leaving your booking until 2 weeks before you travel - unless there's something big happening in Adelaide I wouldn't foresee a problem. The big event is the Adelaide Arts Festival, but that's biennial, the next due until 2006. Check the South Australian Tourism Commission for more info, though - www.southaustralia.com/home.asp

The last time I was in Adelaide we stayed at the Mercure Grosvenor at 125 North Terrace - excellent location and no complaints otherwise.

Adelaide is a very easy city to navigate - the city centre is laid out on a grid plan, the metropolitan area is pretty flat, and you can usually orient yourself by reference to the Mt Lofty TV towers in the Adelaide Hills to the east. It's also peaceful, although walking alone at night in the Parklands (they border those four terraces I mentioned) may not be a great idea. This is just commonsense, not based on any particular identifiable threat.

We were in Adelaide last month and stayed in the city in the Festival City Hotel. Good hotel, the rooms were clean and the location was very central. The price for two people per night was $75, not sure how much it is for single.

Thank you guys for your assistance. I think I found a place called Brecknock Hotel which is at 401 King William Street. I am young and net looking for any fancy place, just a clean room with a comfy bed. Brecknock hotel is inside a pub and pretty cheap (AUD$50, includes breakfast).
Has anyone heard or stayed here?? from their website the rooms looks nice and clean.

The Brecknock is about a half mile from the CBD. But it also has the Bay tramline out the front, so it is a cinch to get to the beachside suburb of Glenelg in about 20 mins.

Don't know about the Brecknock but last time I was in Adelaide (about this time last year for the arts fest) I stayed at a pub on King William - right in the CBD. $50 AUD for a single with en suite, TV, no brekkie. I think it was the Ambassador.

A huge rambling place. Bit scruffy but clean enough and excellent location. If you are interested I will dig out the phone number.
