Please advise-Sydney, Melbourne

We've just secured reservations. Melbourne (Grand Hyatt) 22-24 Dec. Back to Sydney (Hilton) for dinner 24th until 1 January with a side stay in Hunter Valley (Tower Lodge). Any ideas, tips..what to see, do, tours. We're open to renting a car as we will do so for Hunter Valley. Blue Mtns. better car or tour? Also restaurants espe. for 24, 25, 31. I've been told many places close. Would prefer a la carte and would love a BBQ. Please advise. Thanks.

We really liked Hunter Valley more than we thought we would when we were there a year ago.
The Hunter Valley Gardens are quite spectacular if you're into gardens.

Can I suggest spending some time on the NSW central coast - Terrigal is a nice beach spot with shops and lots of places to eat. Woy Woy & Ettalong Beach area are also nice.

Not many places are open on Christmas day apart from a few hotels/Pub and clubs and there food is not known to be good.

If your open to driving, I would say drive over a tour anyday. You have so much freedom when you drive yourself and you will get to see more places.

My suggestion for Xmas day would be to arrange a picnic basket with the hotel and head to the beach or a national park and relax.

Cheers

When in Melbourne you should take a day trip to the Great Ocean Road. It is a beautiful spot, and home to the famous Bells Beach. Spend some time wondering the cafes and shops in the laneways of the city, or go down to St Kilda for a meal at the many restaurants there.
