Perth or Brisbane in January ?

We are undecided among a visit to Perth or to Brisbane during our vacation in Australia to January.
Better a visit to Pinnacles and to Rottnest Island or an excursions to Byron Bay and Fraser Island ?
Could you give me your suggestions ?
Thanks
Hi
Both cities "can" be very hot at that time of year and both cities can be very nice at that time of year too. If you go to Brisbane there is much much more than just Fraser Island and Byron Bay - there is the whole of the hinterland just begging you to go and enjoy it with all the natural attractions that you could ever want. Also there are many other islands i.e. North Stradbroke ( with dolphin feeding) Morton ( great diving and the highest sandhills in the world) There are the two big tourist centres either side of Brisbane of the Sunshine Coast to the north and the Gold Coast to the south with many attractions in both centres.
I live near the Gold Coast and you would expect temps of about 30deg Celcuis at that time of year and with sea breezes it is very pleasant.

I'd vote for Perth, an undiscovered treasure, not just Perth, but surrounding area, especially the South, beautiful rugged coastlines, uncrowded beaches, so much to see and do. Yes, do get up to the Pinnacles and out to Rottnest Island, that's just for starters, include Fremantle, too.

I would vote for Queensland any day of the year actually. There is little to do in West Australia in comparison to Queensland and it can be super hot in W.A at that time too ( and I mean HOT) Also unless you have continuous airconditioning it is not nice travelling either.

Hi Monica!
I haven't been in Brisbane yet, but I sure can recommend Perth. I spent 3 weeks in WA in October 2001.
Some of my pictures from the trip are available at http://moffedille.net/mappic/

Perth is super boring, parochial and insular. There is little to do that can't be done better anywhere else in Australia. It can get dreadfully hot and there is no getting away from it. It is mostly desert in the summer and to compare it with the eastern side of Australia is like comparing southern Texas with New England.
