Perth and Adelaide Festivals

We will have one day or night for festival-going in each city. I've seen the brochures for both, they are a bit overwhelming. I can probably narrow down the choice for tickets but I am wondering more about ambience....do the festivals "take over" the cities...is it better to make a spontaneous decision about what events to attend or are tickets mostly sold out in advance, do you just wander around and watch street art, etc. I'd appreciate any help on what it's like to be in Perth and/or Adelaide during festival time...I'm not even sure what kinds of other questions I should be asking! Thanks.

What kind of festivals are we talking about? I can't think of any festival that took over Perth when we lived there, other than Australia Day festivities, which was pretty full on.

And then there was the Melbourne Cup 'let's all get *hitfaced day'. Never seen anything quite like it.

FromDC, you mean the Adelaide Festival, March 1-17, and Perth Festival, Feb. 8 - March 3?
