Penguin Parade question.

Our time in Melbourne is somewhat limited. If we are going to South Island, New Zealand, should we go to the Penguin Parade, too. Thanks.

I don't quite understand what you are asking. Are you saying that you are already intending to see penguins when you visit the South Island in NZ so is it worth doing it a second time?

I would think that one encounter with the penguins would be enough.

If you are referring to the Penguin Parade on Otago Peninsula in New Zealand, you might want to consider Nature's Wonderland unless small children are involved.

I'm sorry I didn't make myself too clear. We will be in Melbourne first and want to see many sites in 4 days. We were wondering, since we've heard there are penguins to be seen during our stay on the South Island, if it is necssary for us to devote most of a day to go to the Penguin Parade? We have no idea where to see them in New Zealand. As Barbara suggested, maybe we should go to Nature's Wonderland, but I'm not sure what that is near. Thanks!!!!

Hi, jacylou,
There is a special Penguin Place on the way to the Albatross sanctuary on Tairoa Heads in Dunedin, and also at Oamaru. However, I'm not sure when you are in the South Island, and whether or not they will be around then. The Oamaru group are little blues who come up at night time, whereas the PP penguins are visible during daytime.
Dot.

Thanks, Dot.
We will be in New Zealand for two weeks, beginning Oct. 10.

Nature's Wonders is on the Otago peninsula near Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand. We skipped the penguins on Phillips Island due to lack of time.

Hi Jacylou,

The Penquin Parade in Melbourne is very touristy, although there is a new, smaller tour available that gets you away from the other hoardes of tourists showing up in 50 passenger motorcoaches.

What's your itinerary for the South Island?

Melodie,
Thank you for your reply. Our itinerary for New Zealand is not finalized yet. We fly into Christchurch and fly out of Auchland. We will be in N.Z. for two weeks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We will be renting a car. Also interested in the substitute for the Penguin Parade! Thanks, Linda

It is the sheer number of Fairy Penguins at the Penguin Parade that makes it exceptional. There are many other places along the coast where you can find small colonies but their location is kept secret by locals to protect them from visitors.
