Packing for Fiji
 

From experience......don't over pack clothes for Fiji resorts. You will live in Sulu's with t-shirts. When visiting the village you must cover your knees and shoulders, so t-shirts work well. And you will never wear shoes,in fact shoes were not allowed in the building at both places we stayed. In retro - I packed way too much and ended up leaving lots of clothes for the villagers.

We're leaving for Fiji next week. We were wondering if taking small gifts for the village children would be appropriate, and if so, any suggestions? Candy; small games, etc.?? Any suggestions appreciated.

Anne, <BR>You lucky woman! Wish it were me! On another bulletin board someone asked this same question and here is what was suggested by someone who works there. If you're going to a popular island such as Castaway, Malolo, etc. the school aged children are not in too much need. Now if you're staying around Nadi or an area like that school supplies are a huge hit. I think colouring books, crayons or other writing utensils are good, and maybe paint sets and paper. When I saw how much candy the local children were given by people on our cruise it bothered me. How many of these kids see a dentist? Just my 2 cents. <BR>Have fun, <BR>Diane <BR>

Anne first let me ask you how people in your neighbourhood would feel if strangers mad a habit of handing out 'goodies' to kids on the street. <BR>Think about this Please and understand I'm not criticizing your intentions in any way. <BR>As Diane says village kids who live near Resorts are not starvelings in any sense, if you truly want to help someone have a look at this site <BR>http://www.wforw.org/

Fiji Fred - great reference. Do you have any personal experience with these folks? <BR> <BR>For what it's worth, my fave Fiji T-shirt was on a local guy in Suva attending the launch/christening of a new inter-island ferry (much singing and speechifying - a great scene). It read, "In Fiji we love tourists - the last ones were delicious!"
