Oysters
I love oysters and here in the United States the rule is eat them only in the months with a "R". Since the seasons are reversed in Australia, is the rule eat them only in the months without a "R"?

Hi Bajaflesch
Australia has a few different varieties of oysters, all in different waters with different spawning seasons so you can get them at pretty well any time of the year. I think the east coast season is April to August and the South Australian season is March to November but if you are happy to swap varieties you would be right all year around. I also think that the Sydney Rock oyster is farmed so it doesn't have a season but am not sure, I can't remember not being able to get Sydney Rock oysters but I can remember times when I couldn't get Coffin Bay (SA) oysters. I know for sure that we used to have oysters at Christmas so some are available in summer. |
Yes you will be able to get oysters They will vary in size...Sydney Rock being the smallest.
I too love oysters we have found them to be the most expensive in Perth. You will find a lot of restaurants will not have them on there menu. I guess its to do with there shelf life & turn over. I had a funny experiance many years ago in New Zealand when I asked for 1 dozen oysters natural. They said they only had fried oysters..I had never heard of them done this way, anyway I insisted that they not fry them & present them to me as is, which they did...tinned fresh !!! I have to tell you that it took all my inner strength to eat them...they were shocking...I hope things have changed since then in New Zealand. Anyway you will enjoy the Aussie oysters very much. |
Thank you Aussie Jo......That was a great story. I was laughing out loud. You are very correct. Love raw oysters, forget fried.

Aussie Jo
Give me a break, everyone knows that our Bluff oysters are the best in the world, fresh not tinned. |
when you are in sydney go to the sydney fish markets at blackwattle bay.
if you travelling along the coast stop at the fishermen's cooperative stores at the fishing towns. |
