Outerwear to bring? Early March

Thinking about what to bring for outerwear- early March in Tasmania and then Melbourne.

Raincoat- almost to the knee, mid-weight, lightly lined. Has a hood.
Or-
Also have an anorak, about the same length, but thin. Also a hood.

Either I could put a layer under. I know (or should I say I have read) that the weather is changeable, but I still have to figure out what's the best choice! Many thanks.

Weather in Melbourne can still be hot in March. Certainly wouldn't need lightly lined- that would be a winter coat here.
Are you hiking , doing lots of outdoor activities ? If not just an umbrella for Melbourne.
depends where you are going in Tasmania eg Cradle Mountain !! Or ???

2014 weather for Melbourne - 26mm (1 inch in Stone Age) of rain and 25c mean temp for March !

Could be cold and wet in Tassie in March. Whichever of your jackets is lightest - then you can add and subtract layers. Temperature could be as high as low 30 Cs but drop down to single figures at night. Your information is correct. The weather is changeable ALL the time here but March is generally a beautiful time to visit the southern states.
Don't forget a sun hat and sunscreen. The UV is still very high here until April.

oh my, knew we were coming end of summer/early fall but didn't realize it may be that warm. Guess my capris and sandals will be in order also!

Hobart and Launceston, doing a few day trips too.

It's my favourite time in Melbourne- weather usually perfect . Tasmania a little cooler- Hobart mean max 20.8 min 10.8 , Launceston mean max 21.1 mean min 8.9
Hats are compulsory in schools up to May due to high UV so do heed Kwaussie s advice!!

thanks for the heads up (ha) about the hats. Besides the baseball style cap I was planning on, I'll also bring the brimmed hat I wear at the beach!
