outback camping
 

I'm planning to spend 3 or 4 weeks all over Australia in April-May of next year. I'd like to do some sort of guided camping experience somewhere, could do Queensland, the Red Centre, or Western Australia, whichever is best. I'd prefer something fairly authentic, something approaching what the original bushmen or Aboriginese may have done. Any suggestions?

I am not sure what age you are but have heard sometimes about camping out in remote locations with aboriginals while assisting them with some of their projects. I was reading just the other day about such a opportunity available through STA travel, had a quick look at the website but couldn't see much (but didn't look real hard). But the website it self may give you some pointers.

There is also something called city slickers drove. A drove takes 6 months but you can join in for as long as you wish.

Well Jane has given you some good websites to check out.

I am not sure about what your idea of authentic is when it comes to camping, if you mean totally living off what you can find in the bush well your mostly out of luck cause most native animals in Australia are protected by law from hunting. Aboriginals have been granted rights to hunt in their traditional way but there are restrictions on people entering their lands and this can be a long drawn out process to go through before a permit can be issued before you can enter those lands.

Now having said that you can do the above with certain tour companies and I have listed a couple of links to what I think you may be after, of course I may also be way off the mark with what you want but I will start with this and see if it is the kind of experience you are after. You can certainly do organised trips in Kakadu (NT) where you camp - and it's an amazing place. When exactly are you going?
