Ohau Point Seal Colony destroyed
Our thoughts go out to the people of Kaikoura who lives are shattered because of the earthquake.
Sadly, the wildlife has also been affected. http://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/8...royed-by-quake |
Kaikora is a wonder place and one of our favourite in NZ and we always pay a visit to the seal colony there. Our thoughts are with te people of the town, indeed all Kiwis and let's hope they get back to normal as quickly as possible.

I will sadly miss Ohau Point, Ohau Waterfall and all the seals and pups who have called it home. I've spent many hours there during our visits to the area.

What a shame..on Facebook I had the following post re Kaikoura, I stayed at a wonderful little homestay there,
" only time will reveal what has happened to Kaikoura Mini Backpackers. Suffice for now that my tenants are safe and have been evacuated. However, the backpackers will obviously not be open in the foreseeable future. Kaikoura remains cut off from North and South, has no water or sewage or power, but an abundance of help and resilience." |
The earthquake lifted the seabed by several metres, which will further impact fisheries and tourism:

I'm so sorry for this tragic event. So much heartbreak & damage. My kindest thoughts are with all our Kiwi friends.

A good sign?
"It seems seal pups are still attempting to swim up Ohau Stream...The track to the stream remains dangerous and closed to the public." http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/nz-e...au-point-seals |
Very good news I thinkDiamantina, looks like the track will eventually be made usable as well as the pool below the waterfall. Great to see the babies are still in the area.
