Aby, it would be easier to read your posts if you used good grammar, spelling and punctuation. You don't have to text message here. :-)

We were on a pretty tight budget when we won our trip to New Zealand; we were able to extend our trip by a couple of days and do some more expensive activities (dolphin swimming and black water rafting) by staying in hostels and cooking our own meals whenever possible.

Most of our hotels had refrigerators, so when we weren't able to cook we would go to the supermarket and buy breakfast and lunch foods. We ate breakfast in our room before leaving for the day, and packed our lunch and snacks along for the most part.

Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree forums - http://www.lonelyplanet.com - will have a wealth of information for the younger budget traveler.

aby - NZ is perfectly set up for budget folk. Many excellent hostels; discount deals from the main bus companies with a YHA or VIP card. And loads of small shuttle mini buses to get you from a to z. It is the easiest of easiest places to travel and it is WONDERFUL!!

Best tip of all - get hold of a book like the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide.

You could also check out:

www.yha.com.au
www.vipbackpackers.com
www.magicbus.co.nz

There are loads and loads of sites out there with useful info - get hunting!!

And the Thorn Tree, of course.

Have fun.

The websites www.bugaustralia.com and www.hostelz.com have comments from people who have stayed at hostels in New Zealand.

Kiwi experience www.kiwiexperience.com is a hop on hop off bus tour for backpackers.

Even if you want to do your own thing, it is a good idea to check out where the bus tours go.

I'll also recommend Budget Backpackers - http://www.bbh.co.nz - a huge listing of hostels. Two of the three we used were BBH members, both small, friendly, cozy places to stay.
