NZ school holidays in July?

We're planning to visit NZ in the first half of July. Thanks to the many helpful members of this forum, we've learned a lot about the weather, driving conditions, and things to do at that time of year, and we will probably rent an RV and see as much as we can. We're wondering if there are any NZ school holidays (midwinter break?) in early- to mid-July and, if so, whether these might increase the number of people camping at holiday parks, skiing, sightseeing, etc. Any information on this would be helpful. Thanks!

I'm not sure about NZ school hols - but in Oz the Victorian schools have the first 2 weeks of July off and quite a lot of people go to the skifields in NZ then.

This time does coincide with school holidays in NZ. There will be an increased number of people seeking accomodation and skiing as it is the guaranteed break for people with kids where there will be snow and ice etc etc.

Do not be discouraged, just plan ahead and book accomodation.

cheers
ned

If you are renting an RV then accomodation is not an issue, you will find plenty of space. With our small population there is always room even in the ski season and in the south island you have a choice of various ski areas.
If you ski Mt Hutt you can stay in Christchurch and just drive there for the day or maybe overnight in Ashburton. It depends on your itinerary.

Thanks for that information! We'll plan accordingly--and keep our fingers crossed for good driving weather at sea level and snow in the mountains.

Hi!
The July school holidays in NZ this year are July 5-20. You shouldn't have too many problems with accommodation at holiday parks apart from the popular ski areas near Queenstown and Wanaka and in the North Island. It would pay to book in advance, but only in those places.
July is our coldest month and the South Island is colder than the North Island.
Enjoy your trip.
