I guess it doesn't sound to me like she is really doing anything that you couldn't have done on your own. What hiking maps has she provided? Not sure why you think there are cultural differences, as compared to Europe.

Anyhow since she has set you up with all of that, I don't really have anything more to contribute. Enjoy your trip.

I have just a few questions more! I took mlgb's advice & I'm doing the work myself...I'll be happier that way. Here's my question:
We start in Auckland, landing early and we stay for 2 nights - may re-think to only do 1 night to acclimate (I will explain below).
Then:
We go to Puka Park in Pauanui for 3 nights: do walks/hikes/beaching: drive to Hahei, find hikes in Coromandel, Hahei (boat cruise), Cathedral Cove, walks next day.

Check out of Puka Park, hike Karangahake Gorge on the way to Lake Taupo (stay for 3 nights):
- (Day 1) Same day we arrive in Lake Taupo: Boat Cruises, hike Huka Falls
-(Day 2) Morning: Maori Carvings cruise (boat if I can find one) Afternoon: Hike Huka Falls (if we don't get to it day before); or visit geothermals at lake's edge
-(Day 3): Drive to Rotorua: Waimangu Thermals (self-guided walk & boat cruise at 3 pm) (return to Lake Taupo to sleep).
Is there enough time to take in all the excursions outlined above at Lake Taupo? Not sure of driving distances/difficulty of driving/traffic etc.

Next day we drive to Tongoriro: do walks etc-suggestions???? stay one night (is this enough there?), next day drive back to Auckland (4 hours-is this accurate time estimate to get back to Auckland?)
Question: In Auckland I want 2 days to prepare (laundry, pack etc) to go to Christchurch on the third morning.
So it's a total of 4 nights in Auckland: do you recommend only spending one day in Auckland at the beginning? We then could have another day in Tongoriro.

Have I confused you all???: Not knowing the country/terrain/roads,, I wonder if we only do one night of acclimating in Auckland, we could stay an extra day in Tongoriro.
All suggestions welcome!

You can get an idea of drive times using Google Maps, but add a bit of time to those. There is always a slow moving vehicle in front.

It takes a while to get around the Coromandel Peninsula and be sure to check tide times for Cathedral Cove.

Since you are arriving early in the morning in Auckland, one night is probably enough.

It used to be safe to leave luggage in your car in NZ parked at a trail head, but now I wouldn't do it. Take anything that can't be replaced easily with you. For me that would include at least one phone and camera charger, meds, all cash and credit cards, passports, etc. I don't travel with a laptop just because I'd worry about it.
