NZ DoC hut fees to rise in some cases

Of interest to those considering doing the Great Walks and other multi-day tramps independently. The fees will still be reasonable:

Prices are still pretty reasonable I think. Considering DOC has to maintain the huts and tracks etc.

Yes, according to a recent series about booming tourism in the NZ Herald: "The Department of Conservation is being forced to spend increasing sums of its $8.5 million Great Walks budget on flying out human waste and maintaining toilets."

I don't think many of us think about such issues created by tourism growth, but it's shocking. Not just on the Great Walks. A recent article in the ODT reported, "About 300kg of rubbish has been collected daily from freedom camping sites around Lake Dunstan at times this year."

Someone has to pay for it.

They do.
There was a segment on The Project (current affairs TV show)tonight about the pathetic amount of money DOC gets to manage and maintain our national parks. Fees could well be much much higher or some tourism tax at the airport. This would upset some people but we have a premium asset here in New Zealand with our parks and visitors might just have to pay for the privilege of visiting them.
I really support DOC and all they do. Their website about all the walks is so informative and I never considered all the waste being removed (what a yucky job!)so they are doing a great job in all aspects.
