NZ - day trips from Dunedin
Hi all
need suggestions for day trips from Dunedin (wife on conference, husband & daughter need some day tours) on July Otago Peninsula is already planned. Any ski sites ?? thanx aby |
You could pop up to Oamaru and take a look around the historic area.
Down to the Catlins and take a walk along the coast. But most stuff is in and around Dunedin. enjoy Glenn www.newzealandatoz.com |
Hi there
THe nearest ski fields are around Queenstown, which is about 4 hours away by road. There are no direct flight between Dunedin and Queenstown, only via Christchurch. In and around Dunedin there are plenty of sights to see. As you have noted the peninsula is good. You could take the Taieri gorge train. Well worth a look as the train climbs toward Middlemarch. http://www.taieri.co.nz/ You could check out a couple of the older homes like Olveston. A bit of NZ Victorian heritage. http://www.olveston.co.nz/ Or Lanarch castle (Not a real castle but looks good all the same) http://www.dunedinnz.com/tourism/?pa...rs&org=266 The Visit Dunedin website has some great attractions listed. If you do not mind the odd hill, Dunedin is good to explore on foot. A very compact city. |
THANKS for the info
about the Catlins - it will be done as a full day after the conference return trip to Moeraki is also planned (maybe combined with Oamaru) Are there interesting beaches for a day return trip ? |
I would HIGHLY
recommend heading out to Tunnel Beach--you could do it in a couple of hours. got some of the best photos of the whole trip here--truly stunning place. good site with details here: http://www.cityofdunedin.com/city/?p...fe_tunnelbeach |
Sandfly Bay on the South Side of the Otago Peninsula is well worth a visit. Great dunes to slide down, seal and penguins there too. Been there many a time and always think it is great.
There are tours out there as well as getting there yourself. http://www.backtonaturetours.co.nz/page3.html The middle picture on this page of the aboves website is sandfly bay. Word of advice though, don't get between the seals and the sea. They are not always as cute and cuddly as they look. |
