NYTimes: trouble along the Great Barrier Reef

For a country I love so dearly, I am very sad to read the story in today's New York Times. For the future of the planet, I am angry. Please read the story for yourself if you are able to bring yourself to do so.

I saw it this am-so sad. And yet we have many climate change deniers including our current folks in charge. EPA being slashed with its climate division decimated is horrifying.

Indeed, yestravel. Some days I feel like I don't recognize the country in which I live anymore.

So true. I dread being back in DC and faced with the daily going ons. It's bad enough to read about it from afar. I just hope we can r cover from he damag bring done.

I know the feeling, yestravel; I am doing my part and know remain encourage by the number of people I see alongside me. In the meantime, I hope you and gottravel enjoy your remaining days in Sydney and that the city is as kind to you as it always is to me.

Thanks for the link to the excellent article, tripplanner001. I'd read a similar article in the Guardian (see below) but missed the one from the NYTimes.

Tragic. I'm glad we dived the GBR twenty years ago when the reefs were healthy.

I'm finding it difficult to be both well-informed and optimistic about the fate of Planet Earth these days myself. I take heart from small local victories, the possibility of creating a new marine protected area off the coast of Dunedin, making small donations or volunteering for the Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust or NZ Sea Lion Trust. This year, the Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust opened a local emergency clinic for penguins that managed to save 6 percent of mainland NZ's endangered Yellow Eyed Penguin population. In these small victories, I find hope.

You're welcome Diamantina. I still have not made it to the Great Barrier Reef over my three trip to Australia. I hope it will still Ben there for me when I make it there. And thank you for the uplifting article about the Dunedin penguins; I definitely need some of these small victories to get through these challenging times.

Tripplanner. I'm afraid there's more bad news about the GBR. It's reported to be a "terminal stage." Tragic.

You should still go there, as it's not entirely dead yet. You also have the option of going to Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. As of 2016, it had escaped coral bleaching. It's awesome as well.

The GBR bleaching has gotten a lot of attention, but I also wonder about the health of other coral reefs in the Pacific and if coral bleaching events there are passing under the radar.

Yes, I saw this article in The NY Times too. Very sad.
