NYE in Sydney
 

Can anyone recommend what to so in Sydney on NYE?

Considering a restaurant option then hang around Circular Quay for fireworks - but not sure if it will be mega busy and you are unable to move andwhat to do post midnight might be a problem - v busy?
- or a cruise on the harbour?

Can anyone recommend any good cruises?

Take a ride on the Watson Bay ferry or the Manly Beach ferry. You will meet the locals, have a chance to take good photos and won't break the bank, either. I was there last year. I treated myself to dinner at a BYO bottle restaurant and walked down to Circular Qui to watch the fireworks at 10:30 p.m. I refused to wait 12 hours for the fireworks, but if I was with a bunch of friends, it would be more fun.

If you have money and wish to spend it then are loads of options - all inclusive packages on boats on islands, etc. etc. I wouldn't just hang around CQ for the fireworks as it will be, as you suspect, mega busy.

You could always eat in one those suburbs with a viewpoint. You wouldn't be at the centre of the action but it's still pretty good. May I suggest Balmain? The STA lay on loads of buses to get you away afterwards, but you would be West of the bridge.

It will be very busy NYE, when we were there a couple of years ago, we decided to get our perfect position at midday ! It was a long wait but worth it , I am not saying that you should get your spot at midday as you can see the fireworks from pretty much anywhere, but with a couple of kids it was good for us.
To be honest after 12:00 we were knackered so went back to get some shuteye, but I don't recall seeing many places open, maybe I was not looking closely enough.

Whatever you decide to do, there will be a hefty premium to pay.
The fireworks are a fabulous spectacle and really our main objective for travelling at that time of year. Well worth the effort.
Just to put it in context, I never queue for anything and don't bother seeing fireworks here in Cardiff. But Sydney is SPECIAL !!

fuzzy's suggestion is a good one and yes Sydney will be very crowded on NYE. However if you are going to go to the trouble of seeing the fireworks I suggest you choose a vantage point on the eastern side of the bridge rather than the western for a better view.It wouldn't even have to be right in the city...anywhere on the harbour between city and Watsons Bay will give you an eyefull. Being amongst it on a ferry even if stationary should be great too. Have fun!

and, just to make Mucky mad, imemdiately after New Years Day the New Year Test (cricket) starts in Sydney - and we take on the ioms - a big revenge match!

"ioms", Margo? Well, I know what you mean. Thousands wouldn't!!

Bring it on. The last Ashes series in England was one of the most exciting sporting events ever, though it helps if you like cricket and you appreciate the mental aspect of the game; and the history and all the Oz v. the old country stuff.

Now if England hold on to them ...

........I'd seriously consider cancelling my trip to London next year. Those 'iom' friends of mine would be insufferable.
