Norfolk Island, any recommendations?
Hello everyone,
We are considering Norfolk Island as our next holiday destination. Does anyone have any recommendations for accommodation on the island? We like 4 star with a view and close to town. :-) Has anyone been? Thanks heaps, Jenny |
We were on Norfolk last June as the final leg of our most recent Australian journey. If you click on my name above you can read the trip report I posted about it. Norfolk is a very small island, only 3 miles by 5, population about 1600 (I think!) You may be disappointed in the quality of the accommodations if you are expecting or needing high end. Most are apartments, although some of those are quite luxurious with commanding views of the sea. Some come with a car for the time you are there. There is a total of one town, Burnt Pine, which has all of the duty free stores, the market, the bowling club (big night out for the fish fry)and the single gas station. We found plenty to do for a week, but you need to schedule yourselves as the planes only arrive twice or perhaps 3x per week from Auckland or Sydney. There is another poster, ElizabethS, who is traveling through NZ and Oz and Norfolk at the moment. She did post a link to her blog before she left, so you might find that as well. We were primarily interested in the historical aspects of Norfolk, and went quite deliberately for the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of the Pitcainers (the Bounty descendants)which we found very exciting. I'm going to assume you are not American, since few would find Norfolk as a destination, and we were the only ones there from US for an entire week, and enjoyed it very much. There is a great deal of info to be had online and if you want a travel agent rec, please ask. Our whole trip was arranged by the Travel Centre on Norfolk, including air from NZ, and that is the easiest way to go. Let me know how else I can help you.

Thank you for your very informed reply.
We are Australians and are interested in the history of Norfolk. We would be looking at going for one week. I will check out the information you have given me. Where did you stay? And can you recommend it? Thanks again, Jenny |
If you want 4-5 star on Norfolk the only choice is Christians of Bucks Point. It is a cottage with everything you could want, including a car, internet, sports gear etc. It is out of town a bit but you have a car.

Brushtail,
We stayed at Bounty Lodge. It was not what we had picked originally (we thought an apt. might be too isolating and we wanted to meet people), but it was Bounty Day week, and our first choice was overtaken by a large family party so the Travel Centre on Norfolk moved us to these apartments and picked up the difference. Four units, LR/DR, full bath and kitchen. Separate one BR with king bed, lovely deck, phone, cable, laundry available. Very close to the airport, but no noise, probably because Norfolk only gets about 4 planes a week. On our departure, we were allowed to stay in the apt until about 4 pm, drive the car to the airport and leave the keys under the mat! I believe these owners also own Kentia Palm Apartments. If I would return I would pick something with one of the dramatic views - there are many! |
