My family is planning a 2-day stopover in New Zealand on our way to Sydney. Which is the best island and what are the 'must see' sites in New Zealand? Thanks!!

Both islands have their charms. Two days is hardly worth the effort however - can you add more time?
Your flights may determine whether you visit Auckland or Queenstown. There is not time for anything else!
Australia is 3 hours behind NZ in time so the flight (although only 3 hours could end up taking all day.

There are way more sights in NZ than you have time for.

I assume your stop over will be in Auckland?

Not enough info. By family do you mean two young kids, three teens, a couple of grandparents? You don't mention your interests.
