new years eve fireworks ....new zealand or sydney?

will be in australia and new zealand dec & jan. i have seen the celebrations in the sydney harbor for new years eve and was amazed at how spectacular they were. Is there anything in new zealand that compares or should i plan on sydney?

Rick,

I've had clients in Sydney over New Year's and they said it was AMAZING. Be advised though, you need to book well in advance, and many of the hotels (as I found out researching their trip), not only "jack up" the rates (like they do in every other city in the US over New Year's), but many also have a "minimum" number of nights that you must book; every property is different - with some it's 5 nights, others are more or less.

Hope this is helpful.

I live in Auckland and believe me if I want to see fireworks I would book a ticket for Sydney.

Get a view of the Sydney harbour bridge and harbour (obviously) and sit back to be entertained.

One thing that Sydney seems to do really well is fireworks displays.

In Auckland it is more of a damp squib.

Cheers

Or, if you have limited concern for life and limb, turn up in any Chinese city during their New Year period (later than ours, of course) and legally buy the sort of explosives used in Sydney at dirt cheap prices. Join the local citizenry in the street - hopefully your travel insurance will cover you for possible consequences.

Sydney city hotel prices, around NY, as Melodie says, are just awful.

You may do better to try a little out of teh city centre, and commute for the fireworks - Alan always has good advice on where to see display. Public transport will get you back to the suburbs - that's what the rest of us do - we can't afford hotels.

I'm a "Sydneysider" & we often just take rugs & a picnic down to Mrs. Macquarie's chair .... but you need to go early in the day - or over the Bridge at Bradfield Park & watch from the banks of the harbour.

Lots of the hotels surrounding the harbour have special NYE events - but they are usually very $$$. The Opera House also often has a special event, and you can watch from there.

I think some of the local boats (Captain Cook etc) might also have dinner dance cruises.

In short, though .... Sydney's definitely the go. If a Kiwi says so, who are we to argue? :)
