New Years At The Sydney Harbour
 

We watched the ball drop in time square in New York City last year and are thinking of going to Sydney this year to ring in 2010. Any suggestions as to the best place to view from?

Where to view depends on available funds!

Absolutelynthe best - the northern foyer of the Sydney Opera House. Expensive.
Next - Fort Denison - in the Harbour. $1000 (we ate there last weekend and the food was very ordinary indeed for what it cost us!)

Several cruising ferries -price varies.

Some restaurants around Circular Quay - such as Aria, Bennelong. Price unknown - but not cheap.

For free - somewhere around the harbour foreshores - preferably ast of the Bridge. Disadvantage - about a million other people are trying to do the same as you do.

Hotels in the city add a considerahble amount to their usual prices over the New Year.

Having said that - it's a pretty spectacular view.

Great advice from Margo! One viewing possibility that would really put you in amongst it, is to be part of the Harbour of Light Parade. It's a mixture of boats, including ferries, that are part of the 9 pm fireworks display--the Kiddie fireworks as we call them. Check with the City of Sydney website for details:

We were in Sydney for NYE a few years ago and took our place at around lunchtime !

We had a brilliant place though, we were almost at the steps of the OH sat on the wall of the quay.

We enjoyed it and it was necessary for us because we had 2 children with us and it was our main reason for being in Sydney that time.

However you can see the fireworks from most places in the harbour, as long as you can see the bridge and the sky you will be fine.

I know someone that took a boat into the harbour and had dinner which was very nice and very expensive too, probably part of the parade Susan7 mentioned.

Whatever you do, it will be fabulous. enjoy.

Margo's right about the hotels bumping the rates up astronomically, and FYI, the other thing they do is have a "minimum stay" which can be 5 or more days too.

<jealous of all of you who've gotton to experience NYE in Sydney!
