Need help with itinerary for Mornington and GOR

Can anyone help with this?

Am planning 2 nights at Mornington Peninsular and 1 night GOR then back to Melbourne CBD this mid-July. We are a group of 8 adults and we intend to self drive.

1) Does it make more sense to take a ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff? (40min ferry ride) or drive from Mornington to GOR? (which seems to be a long detour)

2) Does anyone know if car rental (8 seat people mover) is readily available at/near Queenscliff ferry terminal?

Thank you!!

It will cost quite a bit but it would be much better to catch the ferry across than the long and boring drive. If you are splitting the costs between the 8 of you it shouldn't cost that much anyway.

The ferry ride is lovely and you have a good chance of seeing wild dolphins as go you go across and it will be a substantial time saver.

I doubt there will be much availability of hiring a car in Sorrento and, if so, choices would be very limited. As you need an 8-seater you would probably be much better to book from a major depot in town and drive that down to Mornington. How were you intending to get from Mornington to Sorrento if you want to pick up the car in Sorrento?

The nearest car hire business for Queenscliff would be in Geelong, there's no car rental business in this tiny town. The ferry terminal is a drive on, drive off scenario and you have to walk aways even to find a shop. I adore Queenscliff, it's a fascinating, historic town and very pretty, but it's a classic holiday place and very seasonal.

I doubt if you'd be able to pick up a car in Sorrento either. Have you checked this out?

The Ferry costs about $50 each way - check the webpage. It would be much better than driving around the bay. It is a long drive as not all of it is freeway.

The Baths fish and chips at Sorrento on the foreshore is excellent. Mubble Ice Cream is also fantastic.

The peninsula hot springs are well worth a visit.

Ahh, I should read more carefully. You wanted to pick up the car in Queenscliff, not Sorrento. Regardless, Libretto is right. You would not be able to get a car at Queenscliff.

There is a bus from Queenscliff to Geelong. Check metlinkmelbourne.com.au for timetable. I'd also check two cars instead of a mini bus. If you offered to pay a delivery fee, you might get a Geelong hire car company to drop a vehicle at Queenscliff. Might be worth it as you don't have a lot of time to spare.

You could also catch a train from Geelong to Melbourne if you wished, when you want to return. Check family tickets at vline.com.au. The drive from Geelong to Melbourne is pretty boring.

It's a lot of travelling in a short time but great scenery.
