Motorhome on Milford Sound road?
I've read a lot about the scenic road between Te Anau and Milford Sound. We're planning to go there later this year but we will have a motorhome. Can anyone tell me if the road is suitable for motorhomes please, or would it be better to take a coach trip? Thank you.

Having just done this trip I do not think I would want to take a motorhome. If you have a small unit you will be fine but the road is very twisty and narrow. We had a small car and loved it but if I had a large unit I would opt for the bus trip. It is a beautiful drive and not to be missed. Te Anau has some nice places to park the motorhome if you feel uncomfortable about driving the road. There is also some very steep grades on the road. Wendy

If it is a wide motorhome, then you will not enjoy the trip between the Homer Tunnel and Milford. We did it in a Toyota Hi-Ace hi-top campervan, and it was no problem at all, but we were no wider than a car.

We've just returned from our triip to NZ and Sydney, and it was wonderful. Having said that, I will add that we did a tour on the south island, and with the roads in some places [one lane bridges everywhere!] I would recommend doing that leg of the trip by a tour. There are one day trips leaving from Queenstown I believe. The road to Milford Sound is very winding and narrow, and the tunnel is over a mile long I bilieve, and very dark and very narrow, with some sections slightly wider to allow two way traffic. Keep in mind that whatever you're driving, you'll be dealing with the many tour buses coming through, and they will take up a large part of that narrow tunnel!

Thanks everyone, we'll go on a coach tour!
