Motel on York @ Dunedin?
Has anyone stayed there? How did you like it? Their website looks decent but I couldn't find any reviews on the motel...
Are the one bedroom suites worth the extra money? Thanks! Kat |
I am looking into places to stay in Dunedin also. "Motel on York" is hard to find. I did a search on Google, but not see any reviews from their results, nor on Fodors, Frommers, or tripadvisor.
It looks good from their site, but what strikes me is the name. Surely, a better name than "motel" would be preferable. What rates did you get? Whether suites are worth the money would depend on the differences in rates. In general, for me the answer is yes. My choices at present for Dunedin are Abbey, Alcala, and Hulmes. I am having a hard time deciding. ((F)) |
Hi Jed,
It's NZ$135 for a studio / $160 for a suite in December. Yes I'm totally with you regarding the "motel" issue!! I'm considering Abbey as well. I guess one reason I'm trying to find out more about York is that they got a 5 star rating from Qualmark. (Abbey got 3+) But who knows if my idea of 5 is the same as Qualmark's... :P |
oops I just realized I sounded a bit awkward in my last post which could be misleading - all I meant was, my ideas of 3-star and 5-star could very well be just the opposites of those of Qualmark or any given system ;)

Hi Guys,
Just a quick note froma Kiwi. The term Motel here does not have quite the same "seedy" conotation that it does say in North America, where "motel" and "rent by the hour" may be used in the same sentence. Motels here tend to be very clean, well serviced establishments. Some are at the rougher end of the spectrum but you would expect to pay accordingly. Some are better than some hotels I have stayed in. Generally the rooms are a lot bigger in motels and generally the self catering option is available with many having full kitchens. Hope this helps in clarifying any potential misconceptions you may have re motels in NZ. BTW. York is closer to central Dunedin but a slight uphill hike to get to if walking. Abbey Lodge has a great location next to the Botanical Gardens, which are well worth a look through, but is about 3 kms from central town. Also I hope you are there out of term for the University as Abbey lodge is in the middle of "Scarfy land" the student quarter which can be a little "lively" shall we say. Alcala is a bit out from the student area and a little closer to the town centre. It is also on a bus route. With Hulmes Court you could not get much more central if you tried. Bit of a hike up View Street from Moray Place but very central location. To give you an indication of how steep View Street is, there used to be a sign when I lived there telling motorists to park their car with the petrol cap on the upside so fuel did not leak out. It is only a short connector street though so you wont kill yourself climbing it. Try Baldwin Street in North East Valley for that lol Cheers Steve |
Thanks a lot, Steve, for the helpful info! Now, that clears up my doubts on quite a lot of situations. :)
Have you heard anything good / bad regarding York? Thanks, Kat |
Hi Kat
Sorry but I have not heard anything good or bad regarding the York. I lived in Dunedin for five years, but in all that time I don't remember anyone I know staying there. As an aside, I just re read the entire thread and note that you are there in December. You will be fine in the North End of Dunedin then as far as noisy students are concerned as it is Summer/Christmas holidays then and they will have migrated to points north. Cheers Steve |
Ah... good to know. Thanks! :)

Check out wotif.com. Hotel suites are going for NZ125, but not all days. And only 2 weeks in advance.
Please, please, wherever you stay, come back to this post and tell us how it was. Thanks. |
Hi Jed,
I couldn't find Motel on York on wotif.com - was that the rate for Abbey? Sure I'll certainly post reviews after I come back! Kat |
Indeed, it was for Abbey - sorry.:-[

I'm back from NZ and I'm answering my own question -
