Morotcycle tours in New Zealand?

My boyfriend really wants to take a motorcycle trip to New Zealand either at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. My question is, when is the best time (weather wise) to do a trip like this? We definately want to tour the South Island and possible some highlights on the North. We will be also stopping in Fiji on the return. Any advice or suggestions would be very helpful. Also, any suggestions for motorcycle rental companies. We plan to tour independantly, not in a group.

Thanks

friend who rents bikes all over suggests you look at this site for info, although I am sure there are others:

I just realized that I can't spell very well. I meant to say motorcycle (not morotcycle)

My folks are bikies and I bought this book for them when I was last in new zealand - it might be worth you getting a copy. (it's on amazon as well if you're OS)
