More pilot whales to strand at NZ's Farewell Spit
I hesitated to post this yesterday as it is not specifically travel related. Yesterday, NZ was facing its third largest whale stranding in history, but today hundreds of more pilot whales were headed for Farewell Spit, a place known for whale strandings. More about it here:

Just saw this on the news in London. Absolutely heartrending! All power to those who helped trying to get the whales back into the water.

Oh no, not again. I'm so sorry to hear about this - why whales repeatedly beach themselves at Farewell Spit has always been baffling, and I hate to hear of yet another incident.
I so admire those hard working volunteers. It does my heart good to see so many people come together to help. |

Hopeful signs: majority of pilot whales from the latest stranding were able to refloat themselves overnight, however, they are reportedly in the shallows:
