Melbourne restaurants idead
 

Hi Everyone,

My wife and I will be in Melbourne in December for 4 nights. I am trying to decide which restaurants to eat at. We are staying at the Duxton Hotel. So far i have booked a dinner reservation at The Botancial in South Yarra. Has anyone heard of Mrs. Jones or Momo or Lionel's Kitchen. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for something tasty and good that will not break the bank.

One suggestion would be to go to Lygon Street in Carlton, by tram or taxi (about 10-15 mins) and just walk along, pick somewhere that appeals and enjoy. This street has loads of restaurants, nearly all good and is very popular. You shouldn't need to book ahead. Most restaurants in this strip are Italian but there are also Thai, Greek etc.
There are also some great restaurants in the Crown Casino complex but you will pay more and the food will not necessarily be better.

A couple of suggestions:

Cicciolina in St. Kilda on Acland St. AMAZING, reasonable...no reservations, so get there early. Right on the tram line.

If you're youngish (I don't mean to be rude, but 45+ may not enjoy this next one as much) but a hip, cool place for a casual meal and great drinks/atmosphere is the Hairy Canary on Little Bourke St in the city.

Other options are all over the place...

Melbourne is recognised for it's excellent and varied restaurants, so you'll have loads of choice. Southbank has lots - mostly good. The new restaurants at Federation Square have almost all had good reviews as have the ones down at the newly developed Victoria Harbour (at the end of Bourke & Collins St). Both Fed Sq and Vic harbour restaraunts feature modern food.

Let me know if you have a particular favorite style of food and I'll see if I can be more specific.

i am looking for something cool, fun and not crazy in price. i will be in melbourne a total of 4 nights. i am staying at the duxton on flinders. We like italian, seafood, steaks, japanesse. we just want decent food.

The Blue Train at Southbank is a bit funky, with outdoor and indoor areas and always busy. Sort of a cafe/restaurant that serves cake and coffee, pizzas, pasta, curries, etc. Also does breakast I think.

For Japanese go to Kuni's in Lt Bourke St - it's between Russell & Exhibition, or there's a good japanese on the second level at Southbank called ( I think) Migasaka. Blue Train at Southbank is terrific for cafe/eclectic style food.. One of the rest's at Fed Sq has a great modern Japanese stlye (but I can't remember it's name - will try and find out, but I don't recall it as being inexpensive!). The classic Melbourne Itialian experience is to go to Lygon St, Carlton and cruise the cafe/ restaurants there - or try Italy 1 in town - in George Pde, a laneway between Collins St & Flinders Lane. Victoria St in Richmond is the place to go for Vietnamese. Hope this helps.
