Melbourne restaurant recommendations

I'm celebrating signing a book contract with a gastronomic weekend trip to Melbourne with a friend! We are going to Movida one night (one of my favourite restaurants) and we are going to Cafe du Monde at Heide for lunch on Friday. I'm trying to work out where to go for dinner the other night.

We eat all styles of cuisine and are as happy with tasty ethnic as with more upmarket places. Can Melbournites (or out of towners) tell me what are your current favourites? We are staying in the city but are happy to go to the suburbs.

Just as well they don't weigh people as well as bags for the return journey!!!

And you can wear what you like, provided it's black ;)

Don't forget to tell us when your book's published - I can always use some art info.

Hope you have the most wonderful time at all of the great places you have chosen, what a perfect way to celebrate!

I adored Cafe du Monde at Heide - went there in late summer , hosted by a dear friend for my 60th birthday - tiny servings, but sensational food and a stunning setting. The "summer" soup was the best I have ever had - the very essence of tomato, made with fresh herbs from their garden.

What a lovely place for a birthday celebration Libretto! I love Heide, I try to go there most times I'm in Melbourne. Now that Cafe du Monde is there it's even more of an incentive. The food is fabulous isn't it, and they have a wonderful selection of wine by the glass.

There's an exhibition I want to see there currently called "Up Close" which includes the work of Melbourne photographer Carol Jerrems.

Momo is fab but hard to get into.Even better than Cutler

Susan, I don't think that either Coda or Cumulus take bookings, you need to queue up.
I have three other suggestions out of the CBD for your consideration they take bookings, but a generally pretty busy
Rumi- Lygon St East Brunswick, Middle Eastern/Persian
Cafe Idda- Lygon St East Brunswick, Sicilian
Embrasse- Drummond St Carlton, French (winner of Young Chef of Year, 1 hat)

they are all worth a try.
Public transport to Rumi and Idda is by the number 1 or number 8 tram in Swanston St. Tram passes the door of both.
Embrasse is a block off the Lygon st strip
Cheers
