melbourne 3 days, sydney 3 days
 

I just found out I am travelling to Melbourne and Sydney next week and will be in each city approx. 3 days. I haven't had much time to research -- any suggestions on places to go and things to see would be very helpful!

Take the ferry to Manly Beach. Great photos along the way. Walk up the Pilon at the Harbour Bridge. Once again, great photos. Take the elevator to the top of the Sydney Tower, and you guessed it, great photos.

If you forget your camera, ignore the above.

If you do a Search at the top of the page for Sydney and for Melbourne you will get stacks of ideas, especially for Sydney. Or alternatively go to Destinations also at the very top of the page.

On your first day in Sydney, take the ferry from Circulay Quay to Manley. The sunlight and fresh air seems to fight the fatigue from your jet lag. On the second day, take an "explorer" bus around the city. This is a great way to get an overview of the city with interesting commentary and the flexibility to stop and look around wherever and whenever you like. On day 3, take another ferry to the Taronga Zoo or a train to the Blue mountains. Tickets for both can be purchased at Circular Quay.

I agree to do a search... I just posted a trip report which included 3 days in Sydney and 2 days in Melbourne (plus a drive of the Great Ocean Road).

Without knowing your likes and interests, probably tough for us to provide too much useful info.

Read the Sydney Morning Herald www.smh.com.au for a couple of days before you go, you'll have an idea of what's the buzz down there, and you can look at the travel links - there is great info available for a mouse click!

Thanks for all of the great suggestions...In Melbourne I'll be on my own (I'm meeting my husband who is there on business) -- any advice on day tours? I've read a lot about the Great Ocean Road Road and wineries -- but would like something for the day, where I'd be picked up and dropped off at my hotel.

There are a number of different tour companies offering day tours to the places you want. Probably the best thing to do is simply to do a google search for Great Ocean Road tours and Yarra Valley Tours (that's for the wineries) and browse through the different companies to see which ones take your fancy.

I'm afraid I can't give any recommendations as I have never had to use one.

Their web site gives local contact numbers and you will probably have to call them the day before to find about prices, departure times and pickup points. Probably, they will even pick you up at your hotel. We took this tour while in Melbourne last February and were completely satisfied.

Even though it will be summer in Australia, the GOR can be chilly during the middle of the day, so bring a jacket for insurance.

This is a great trip. Enjoy it to the max.
