Medication in New Zealand

Hello everyone,

We will soon be flying into New Zealand from Australia (we're American citizens being tourists in AU for a while) and I'm wondering if anyone knows what the regulations regarding medications are in NZ. I take pills, and I will be having more than a 30 day supply with me as we're going on to Hawaii after we leave NZ.

Is NZ very restrictive(sniffer dogs, confiscation, etc.) about medication coming into the country, or can I bring medication in without worry?

Thank you!

Bring the doctor's prescription:

I usually just put any prescriptions in the original bottles (ie not in a pill caddy). Never been questioned. They were most interested in making sure any hiking golf shoes/ equipment were scrupulously clean.

I use a combination of mini cellophane bags (found at craft stores) and those daily pill organizers (getting old is a real drag). This is my standard MO and I've never had a problem anywhere in the world. As mlgb says, they're more interested in food items, camping gear and hiking boots.

If you're worried, best to keep the pills in their original containers. Pack them in your carry on bag.

Ask your doctor to give you a letter spelling what medication you take and why. This is useful in case you are queried at customs and immigration, and also helpful just in case you are taken ill whilst on holiday. And leave everything in the original packaging.
